11th March Online Diary

When writing the script for my VT i felt really comfortable about writing it because it was something i enjoyed talking about and i knew a bit about, I tried my best also to add in a few jokes that just shows to the audience that it is about comedy even though the title is "Is There A Wrong Time For Comedy" this title is research for me as I am interested in pursuing a hobby of comedy and would like to know if there is anything that i could say that could take a joke over the top and be highly offensive to people. At the beginning of the script i have included what the rest of the show will include which will hopefully keep the viewers watching because the want to watch what will be coming up on my VT.
I have tried to include information about different venues where you can go and try out comedy if that is what interests you, here is the complete script:

Comedy On The Streets Script

Hello and welcome to comedy on the streets, i am Matthew Jump and i am here to talk to you about comedy on the streets of Manchester and whether there is a wrong time to tell jokes or can it fun all day everyday!

Today i will be taking you through different types of comedy there are out there and how you can become a comedian would like to. I am not a comedian although i love to make people laugh and believe that its a great thing to do and i would maybe like to look into doing at some point so this VT will both help me and you after all my dad always did say that i had a face for comedy.

Today i will be interviewing from a special guest who was the runner up in a comedy competition and also i will be interviewing students from Manchester Universities about what makes them laugh.

Back To Me On Camera

Professional comedians are brilliant at making people laugh and most of there work is scripted and done on stage this technique can be very difficult because it all depends on the mood of the audience why reverts back to my main question "Is There A Wrong Time For Comedy?"

Interview With Andy Lee

I am here with Andrew Lee, he competed in young comedian of the year and came runner up, Hello Andy first of all:

How did you get into the competition?
What was the experience like for you?
Why is comedy is important?
What is your favourite type of comedy?
Who is your favourite comedian?
Do you think there is a wrong time to tell jokes?
Is it good to get into comedy at a young age?
What's your favourite joke?

Interview On The Streets

What do you do/watch to make yourself laugh?
Have you ever thought about trying comedy?
Do you know any places where you can try comedy?
Is there a wrong time for comedy?
What is your favourite joke?

Voice Over

Even though not many people know it, but there are lots of places in Manchester where young people can go to try out comedy if that interests them. What people don’t realise is that all famous comedians and comedy actors had to start somewhere and most of them started by doing stand up routines at open mic events at pubs and clubs.

In Manchester there are places such as:
•       Castle Hotel – Which has an open mic event every Monday
•       Lass O Gowry – Which is a pub that has open mic event also on a Monday
•       Town Tavern Hall – Open mic on a Wednesday

There is also a number of places where you can go and watch comedians that have been performing live for a while which you will have to pay for but is a brilliant experience if you want to go somewhere for a good old laugh.
  • The Comedy Store Manchester – Arches 3 and 4 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street, West, Manchester, M1 5LH
  • The Frog And The Bucket – 102 Oldham Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 1LJ
  • Comedy Balloon - THE APE & APPLE, 28 John Dalton St, Manchester, M2 6HQ

Creating A Intro For The Music Show

On the 24th of April i was assigned the role of helping creating the introduction to the music show i was put into a group with Erin, Jack and Josh. Our first task was to look at various other music show introductions too see the type of music they use and also what they include such as pictures or videos. After researching on youtube trying to find an intro that we feel is suitable for a music show we couldn't find anything that was took our interest so we had to try and make something up that we believed would entertain the viewers. As a group we decided that we should include videos that we filmed from Lever Street in January to use in our intro because this then gives the audience and insight into what we will be filming.
Our next task in the process of creating the music introduction was to pick the music that would go over the top, after all four of us listening to various music that we thought would be appropriate we came up with a few that we thought would work, we all decided that the song had to be upbeat and slightly rock like, some of our suggestions where:

The Courteeners - Not Nineteen For Ever
Bloc Party - Helicopter
The Temper Trap - Fader

After observing which song would fit better in our music introduction we decided that The Temper Trap - Fader was the best song because there was certain points in the song where it would fit perfectly with the changing videos in the introduction. After we decided Fader was the best song I left it up to Jack and Josh to edit the sequence together as i believe they are better suited to final cut than i am although i always sat behind them chipping in with idea's of footage that we should use.

9/5/2012 Artists Rehearsals

9/5/2012 - In our lesson today we where asked to film a number of artists that where coming in to perform  there own songs in preparation for filming them in there end of the month assessment, the lesson today was a rehearsal for both the broadcast television students and the music students in order to practice what will be happening at the end of the month.
After being assigned our roles two weeks before todays first rehearsal we had time to be prepared for what will be coming up, I was assigned the role of the presenter and interviewer i believe that this was because i am confident in front of camera and have experienced it before in previous assignments. This meant that i had to watch some video's on youtube on questions that i can ask to the artists, after looking through various videos it wasn't helpful as they questions that they where asking where about the recent success of the band after the bands have been famous for a while so it was easy to get information on the bands to ask questions meanwhile i didn't know who our artist where going to be so just decided to make up some questions such as:

Do you write your own music?
Do you enjoy writing music?
How long have you/your band been performing for?
What famous musician would you like to perform alongside with?
Do you use social networking pages to promote your band?

After receiving the running order for the bands coming in on the tuesday i began to write i script for what will be put onto the tricaster also a number of interview questions because i knew that my co-presenter Erin was away and wouldn't be in for todays lesson which meant that who ever was the interviewer already had there questions set out for them.

I believe my presenting went pretty well although could make some huge improvements such as learning my lines and sound a bit more enthusiastic, another problem that i believe i should overcome is that i don't have to read the words exactly as they come up but i should concentrate on making my presenting more entertaining than boring reading straight off the script, this will help me loosen up although i would have to remember the artists name right.

Another important note i feel is my clothing for presenting as it is a music show aimed between 16-25's i feel that i should dress casually so jeans and a top would be the best thing to wear also it is comfortable. Meanwhile i do have to watch out for wearing clothes with brand names on as it will be streamed live on Ustream so won't be wise to wear brand names.

The Changes To Terrestrial Television New Idea

The Changes To Terrestrial Television

After mine and Dannys idea getting chosen for for creating a VT me and Danny picked who else we wanted to be in our group so we picked:

Nyasha, Luis and Fred i believe that we have a very strong team in order for us to create our VT, after coming together in our group we had a few discussing whether talking about Freeview and the digital switchover was the right thing to do or we should change our idea to talking about 3D and shooting our VT in 3D but i felt as if it would be brilliant filming in 3D but could be a struggle when it comes down to editing and it would be very risky. After dismissing the idea we got back onto which idea we would like to peruse with whether it would be Freeview or The Digital Switchover after throwing round ideas  of what we could talk about we felt that Freeview was too big of a subject to cover and we should maybe just discuss the changes to terrestrial television which we all felt was the best thing to talk about and it won't be biased to anyone also Freds father who works in the industry agreed to a online interview to hear what he's thinks and has to say about the subject

VT For Ricardo - Freeview and Digital Switch Over

After presenting my pitch on the 28th April about my idea of filming a VT based on freeview and how it has developed through the years. It was chosen also with Danny Jacks idea of the digital switchover and how we could create a 5 minute VT together with with our two subjects.
After speaking to Danny during the lesson we both agreed that it would be tough in order to get a guest in to talk about the subjects that we have chosen, although if possible we would send an email to either comet or currys and ask whether it would be possible to maybe get a member of staff to interview, although the guest would have to have worked with televisions for the past 10 years and know what he/she was talking about.

After searching online for a while I was not able to find a suitable website to send an email to which means that we may have to travel to one of the shops and hopefully speak to a member of staff.

Pitch For History Of Television

What will be including in my pitch for my idea of wanting to film about Freeview boxes:

Content Of My Presentation:

My presentation will be on digital boxes and why they have become such a huge part of  everyone's life and everyone will now have wont be restricted to the 5 analogue channels. Many people now have freeview built into the televisions now but still there are some people out there that mightn't want to purchase an new television and rather sick with there old one which only has analogue channels then a digital box is best to buy.
It will also include pictures and videos that I have found on various websites that relate with my chosen topic also I short video of me connecting the cables into an old television to show how to set it up. This means that I will need to get an old television and a simple digital box in order to show people how its done.
My ultimate goal will be to show and a explain to people why the digital switch over happened and what you can do if you don’t have a television with freeview built in.

Research and Material:
In order for me to find about the actual reasons why the digital switch over I will have to research into it which means both looking for primary research and secondary research will come in handy when talking about the subject. For my primary research I plan on travelling to stores around Manchester and hopefully getting a few interviews with colleagues that have been working there for over 10 years maybe to get an insight into what it has been like working through the digital switch over and see how they coped. Also I would like to go around and speak to people on the street and find out there verdict on the switch over whether they bought new televisions or whether they stuck to buying a digital box.

My secondary research will be done by looking at video and news articles on the internet to get a better understanding for myself into why it happened and was it a good choice.

Questions To My Guest:
I would hopefully like my guest to be someone who works in a television store such as Comet and Currys.

•How long have you worked with selling televisions?
•With you working for that amount of time, how big was the digital switch over for your company?
•Do you see more people buying televisions now rather than digital boxes?
•Do many digital boxes get sold nowadays?
•In the future do you still expect digital boxes to be on the market?

Interesting Stats About The Change Over:
189 households and interviewing 25 in more depth, was that 60% of digital newcomers took Freeview and 40% Sky.

The research also found virtually all homes' main televisions were digital-enabled by November 14 and by mid-December 95% of second sets were also ready.
Just 5% of homes said digital was worse than analogue and 94% were either positive or neutral about the switch-off itself.
Digital UK's publicity and community work to get everyone ready for the change was also deemed to have been successful. Only 15% said they would have liked more information.
Nearly 75% of people told researchers they were not worried about it. However, 16% were unaware switchover would affect analogue television recorders.
A spokesman for Copeland Digital Group said: "The switch to digital has been recognised as a very positive change, on the whole well managed and well received, with several benefits for local people and for the area.”
