Pre Production Minutes

14th February - Camera Composition - Looked at framing pictures and why it is important to frame pictures correctly, in the morning of the lesson we looked at different pictures that won the pulitzer prize and looking at how to frame them up correctly and looking at camera techniques such as the rule of thirds and depth of fields.

This is the outline for the rule of thirds and is used in photography, for the shots to be successful the point of interest must be in the middle of the frame which is the box where the four boxes are surrounding.

Image of rule of thirds, found on:

Depth of field is the amount of distance between an object that is close and one that is far away and what you can get in focus it is based on your own opinion because

21st Feb - February - During todays lesson we took out the cameras and filmed the opening of our music production that will be edited for next week. We where each placed into groups and was able to take out a camera in order for us to think of different shots that would be effective for a 30 second intro. Each member of the group was able to think of a shot and able to shoot it however we wanted to, my shot that i chose i felt was an excellent opening to the intro showing a medium close up of 3 speakers stood on a table as a member of our group pressed the on button i felt that this shot was significant because i defies "on" as the beginning of the show. I already knew how i was going to edit the shot. The rest of the group also went off shooting there various shots whilst i helped in anyway i possibly could. At the end of the filming we reviewed some of the shots we used in order to edit them the week after. The reason we chose these different shots is because it symbolises

28th February - On this lesson we was asked to do an editing task where we had to edit footage from the last two weeks ago from the tasks of collecting footage from our college that would be decent enough to put on a wall therefor we had to take into consideration the shot and the background. Also we had to collect footage that would work well for an introduction to our music performances at the end of the semester and we had to combine both pieces of footage together and to create the intro. For me this task was very challenging because it was the first time i have ever been on final cut pro and therefor wasn't sure how to work the piece of software but after a brief introduction to the software and learning how to import and how to 'log and transfer' the footage onto final cut pro which was very helpful to me. I have always wanted to learn how to edit footage that i had shot because it will become very handy in the future if there is a job available also if i wanted to put together something in my spare time.

I was then helped by being shown step by step what to do to be ready to edit the footage that i had collected this made me feel confident because i believe that i can do it myself but also i must also research into creating more footage on youtube because this will also give me a better understanding on editing on final cut that will help me succeed in performing well in certain tasks.

Here is what i created, i believe that for a first time go i believe that it was a decent effort although maybe a different song choice would be more effective or slower shots. I used the same transitions all the time because i was got confused with how to view them before i use each shot. But it takes time to learn new things and i will put the effort in to learn more about this editing software because i would enjoy editing my own videos.

17th March – I presented my pitch to the group and two tutors, I used Prezi as I like the layout of the website and I believe it is more enjoyable to watch rather than doing a presentation on power point. With prezi it also enabled me to add in pictures from my documents and also let me put videos off youtube into my presentation which came in very handy when showing my group what I would like as my set.

I chose my background as pink and the writing as blue as I believed that it would make it stand out and be less dull than sticking with a normal black and white background. The pictures I used also made the people watching laugh which is a great way to capturing the audiences attention.

9th May- In our lesson today we where asked to film a number of artists that where coming in to perform  there own songs in preparation for filming them in there end of the month assessment, the lesson today was a rehearsal for both the broadcast television students and the music students in order to practice what will be happening at the end of the month.
After being assigned our roles two weeks before todays first rehearsal we had time to be prepared for what will be coming up, I was assigned the role of the presenter and interviewer I believe that this was because I am confident in front of camera and have experienced it before in previous assignments. This meant that I had to watch some video's on youtube on questions that I can ask to the artists, after looking through various videos it wasn't helpful as they questions that they where asking where about the recent success of the band after the bands have been famous for a while so it was easy to get information on the bands to ask questions meanwhile I didn't know who our artist where going to be so just decided to make up some questions such as:

Do you write your own music?
Do you enjoy writing music?
How long have you/your band been performing for?
What famous musician would you like to perform alongside with?
Do you use social networking pages to promote your band?

After receiving the running order for the bands coming in on the Tuesday I began to write I script for what will be put onto the tricaster also a number of interview questions because I knew that my co-presenter Erin was away and wouldn't be in for todays lesson which meant that who ever was the interviewer already had there questions set out for them.

I believe my presenting went pretty well although could make some huge improvements such as learning my lines and sound a bit more enthusiastic, another problem that I believe I should overcome is that i don't have to read the words exactly as they come up but I should concentrate on making my presenting more entertaining than boring reading straight off the script, this will help me loosen up although I would have to remember the artists name right.

16th May - Today was another rehearsal day for filming live bands last week there was 4 bands and 5 acts but today there was only 2 bands being filmed, after only receiving the band names in the morning I began to create a script as I was the presenter again:

Up first we have Kane Stansfield singing and playing on his acoustic guitar ready to begin the show for us, so take it away KANE!!!

Thank you Kane for that, but now we will take a short break so we will be back very soon with an interview with Kane himself.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Next up we have a talent band called Nearly Close To Jazz, you are about to rock your socks off

Cheers for that guys, once again we are going to a short break so see ya in a bit!!

23rd May - After I created this script Erin who is the other presenter came up with an idea of putting various questions into a hat and asking the artists to pick a question out of the hat and having to answer the question they have chosen. I believe that this was a great idea as it was both entertaining for the viewers and the artists instead of answering the same old questions over and over again.
I believe the show was a success although it could have been better with timing as when the first act was meant to be being introduced I didn't receive a count down and was put on the spot straight from the beginning without knowing if I was live. Another problem I found with the set up was that I didn't know if I was meant to come on after the act to tell the viewers that the performers where going to be interviewed I think this was again a lack of communication between me and the director.

23rd May - Today was the final time of filming the live acts as there was no more rehearsals and it was the final show, I believe today was a huge success as we filmed a live show from the start till the end without stopping to sort out anything. I arrived in today at half 9 and straight away began to write my script as I was sent the name of the last performer who was unsure of coming in, as my role of the presenter it was to write the script and make sure it was successfully on the auto cue, after saving the script onto the pen drive and putting it into the HP laptop I soon found out a few problems with the software not being able to read the word document, this was a huge problem for me as it was too late to completely learn all my lines which meant that i had to change the file format, then after putting the pen drive back into the laptop it was successful which meant that I was able to read it off the auto cue.

After speaking to the director at the time "Luis Winder" I soon had to change my script because the act that was wary of coming in wasn't attending this meant that I had to delete a piece of script that I had recently written. I also found out that I had to delete a number of lines because the director didn't want me to introduce that there was a break coming up and what they would be doing after the break.

I felt confident that as a presenter I successfully performed to a high standard as I didn't make a mistake and tried to smile and be energetic at all times in front of the camera, I also was talking to the guests to make them feel comfortable. The was only one mistake in the performance when it came to me and I don't believe it was my fault although I think it was because of lack of communication between the director and floor manager as the camera was live and I was not told of a countdown so there was a few minor seconds of me just standing in front of the camera when it was live.

13th Feb Online Diary

For Sams assignment i will have to create my own VT to add into the news production after thinking long and hard into what I can do that will be different to most other people would do, i finally came to my decision that to do something that I enjoy doing, talking about things on a brighter note in the modern world you will watch most news programs and hear about the things that have happened that are of a darker nature such as killings, crimes and other horrific things that can send our country into depression. This is why I believe a bit of comedy would be perfect for the news because a good laugh helps everyone when they are feeling down. My title would be called "Laughter When All Things Seem Bad" this title straight away proves that it is going to be aiming at making the audience laugh even though the things that are happening in the news aren't comical at all
